The Hopkins College Democrats club, as one of JHU’s premier liberal organizations, is committed to advancing liberal causes and enriching the political experiences of the Hopkins student body. We hold weekly meetings to recap the week’s news and have spirited debates on current issues.
This year, we will be campaigning for Democratic candidates in this year’s gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia and will be helping NJ and VA Hopkins students with voting absentee. We will also be hosting workshops on contacting your Congressional representatives. In addition, we also invite politicians and other guest speakers to talk to our members about their most passionate issues; for example, we host an annual picnic with US Representative John Sarbanes (D-MD).
In the past, we have partnered with the JHU Sexual Assault Resource Unit to educate students on Title IX and garner signatures for a petition to reform JHU’s sexual assault policy. We also host debates with the Hopkins College Republicans each year on a range of issues, such as the minimum wage, the role of the NSA, intervention in foreign conflicts, and so on. We often also co-sponsor events alongside the Foreign Affairs Symposium when liberal, Democratic, or progressive speakers come speak on campus; last year, we helped co-sponsor Bernie Sanders’ visit with the FAS and the Milton S. Eisenhower Symposium.
Each election season, we canvass for Democratic candidates who we believe promote our ideals. Last year, we campaigned for Hillary Clinton and downballot Democratic candidates by canvassing in Maryland and Pennsylvania, as well as hosting a phone banking event for voters in North Carolina. We also hosted debate watch parties with the College Republicans and participated with other College Democrat clubs at DemCon, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.
Today, with the Republicans in control of all branches of the federal government, we must work harder than ever to protect past Democratic accomplishments and break ground with our visions of the future. Join the JHU College Dems to help us resist the erosion of liberal progress, engage fellow college students to participate in the democratic process, and create a better America for all.
